The problem with self-awareness,

Updated: Sep 13, 2020

is that the more you have of it, the less you’re able to handle the pressures of daily life, by yourself, without Jesus. So you’re better off living in denial of what’s going on inside, if you want to live like most Christians live — as INdependents, weight of the world on your shoulders, UP TO YOU.

The unusually self-aware are unable to survive without a lot of sovereignty-awareness as they go through their day. The sovereignty of Jesus is way more than a biblical concept to the unusually self-aware — sovereignty-awareness is absolutely necessary to navigate the daily pressures of life with any measure of joy and peace.

The more self-aware you are, the more sensitive you are to your thoughts, feelings, reactions. BUT. This also makes you more sensitive to those around you — especially those with whom you live and work closely. Makes you a better lover of others, more humble, less self-absorbed, more others-absorbed, more fruitful with seculars, and others turned off to Christianity.

How does more self-awareness produce more humility? You’re more AWARE of your sin — of what a great example of a bad example you are, so you confess a lot more and judge a lot less. More undone, more contrite.

Growth in self-awareness is a work of Jesus’ Spirit, opening your eyes more and more to the Jesus-neediness you never saw so clearly, previously. Jesus is a much-bigger deal to the unusually self-aware. The unusually self-aware are not BETTER than other Christians, but our human-wisdom wants us to BELIEVE we are. Only Jesus gets any credit for the growth of self-awareness in a Christian.

Is there anything one can do to nurture growth in self-awareness? Yes, when all alone in your car, turn off the radio and pay attention to your thoughts, feelings, reactions. Over time, you’ll become depressed at what’s inside of you, unless you have both Gospel-awareness and sovereignty-awareness.
