Be Kind to Yourself

is one of my favorite songs, but the problem with the theology of the song is, it’s impossible to be kind to myself, unless the Spirit freshly convicts me of my pride, because when I’m proud ShepherdDave I ooze with self-contempt when I embarrass myself, fail bigtime.

But when I’m humble DumbSheepDave, I could care less about failure, because Jesus is my everything, so it’s effortless for me to extend grace to myself and others, including jerks.  Problem is, it doesn’t last long.

But listening to the song will frequently remind me that I’m NOT being kind to myself, so it’s used by the Spirit to freshly convict me of my sin of pride/independence/worldliness, so I’m joyful and peaceful once more.  Ahhh.

–ShepherdDave, needing all the help he can get from Above, so he’s momentarily DumbSheepDave, enjoying others and himself, just as we are, and enjoying the bliss of Jesus-dependency/humility, so the nonbelievers around him might experience Jesus
